WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team snapped American's three game winning streak, downing the Eagles 2-0 on Thursday night in Washington, D.C.
"Really delighted with the win today as it was a full squad effort," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "I have a lot of respect for American as they are a good team and similar to us, try to play good soccer. They move the ball well and caused us problems at times so we had to work hard to find a solution to their shape and good possession."
ODU (4-2) was first to find the back of the net just under 13 minutes into the match. A through ball from Cami Johnstone at the top of the 18-yard box provided Megan Watts enough space to hit a right footed shot into the upper left corner.
The Monarchs added an insurance goal in the 76th minute as Johnstone would carry the ball herself this time through the middle. Johnstone with the right footed shot found the underside of the crossbar, forcing the ball to bounce across the goal line to put ODU ahead 2-0.
"We scored two really good individual goals which in games like these can be the difference and they proved to be today: both Megan and Cami took their moments so well," Hind said. "It was also a really strong display from our back line to keep the clean sheet which is another positive as they have been so strong across the line for most of the season so far."
Freshman keeper Julia Kato had nine saves for American (3-3).
The Monarchs will hit the road once again to take on UTSA in San Antonio, Texas on Sept. 16 at 8 p.m.
