RICHMOND, Va. – Propelled by a career-best 66 in the second round, Filip Wetterqvist carded a 7-under-par score of 209 en route to a share of fifth place at the VCU Shootout, which ran Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,927-yard Country Club of Virginia Tuckahoe Creek Course. The top-five finish is the first of Wetterqvist's career.

The junior from Stockholm, Sweden tallied an even-par 72 in the first round on Monday morning before catching fire in the afternoon. He carded eight birdies against two bogeys for a 66 (-6) and rose from a tie for 28th into fourth place. Wetterqvist added six more birdies in Tuesday's final round but settled for a 71.

Prior to Tuesday, Wetterqvist's best finish came at the 2019 ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, where he tied for 26th.

For the event, Wetterqvist led the field of 72 individuals in total birdies with 18 and had the second-lowest score on the track's par-4 holes, finishing them at 7-under. He was also one of the better players on the par 5s, going 5-under on those holes.

Gustav Fransson made a strong push for the top-10 on Tuesday, falling just short. He fired a 5-under 67, the Monarchs' low round of the day, to turn in a 54-hole score of 211 (-5), which was good for a share of 11th place. Fransson was right behind Wetterqvist in terms of par-4 scoring and was tied for third at 6-under. Additionally, he had 12 birdies and 36 pars.

Rasmus Konradsson fired a 67 in the opening round before following with scores of 76 and 72 to finish in a tie for 25th at 1-under 215. Finishing just two strokes behind him was Jakob Henriksson, who tied for 35th. Mason McCoy rounded out ODU's scoring five in 67th.

Competing as an individual, Kazuki Yamauchi turned in the three best rounds of his collegiate career to finish one stroke over par and in a tie for 35th. The native of Osaka, Japan carded a career-low 69 in the opening round before finishing with back-to-back 74s.

VCU's Charlie Kennedy took home individual medalist honors at 12-under 204. Christian Chapman of St. Bonaventure finished in second just one shot behind Kennedy.

As a team, ODU finished at 12-under (852) and in fifth place, just two shots out of a tie for third. The Monarchs bettered their score in all three rounds, culminating with a 6-under 282 on Tuesday. Richmond finished first at 844 (-20) with VCU just one stroke behind them.

"We knew it would be very difficult with Richmond and VCU playing well and on their home course," head coach Murray Rudisill said. "We were looking to be in the top two or three, but it was not an awful showing. Filip and Gustav played very well, and we're excited to see some of the same teams next week."

The Monarchs were tied for third in par-4 scoring at 1-under and paced the field with three total eagles. ODU also tied VCU for the most birdies (58).
