PINEHURST, N.C. –The Old Dominion men's golf team improved its second-round score by five strokes to remain in contention ahead of Sunday's final round at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Monarchs sit in a two-way tie for fourth place at 27-over 595 – six strokes off the lead and only three shots behind second-place Longwood.
 
"We started off poorly again today but played much better on the back side," head coach Murray Rudisill said. "We are only six shots out of the lead, so if the guys can get on their 'A' games tomorrow we still have a chance to win this event."
 
ODU carded a second-round 295 on the par-71, 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8, which was tied for the fourth-best round on the day. A pair of Monarchs in Gustav Fransson and Carter Morgan bettered their individual scores on Saturday.
 
Fransson carded a 2-over 73 in the second round to jump four spots into a tie for ninth at 5-over 147. The senior from Umea, Sweden went 2-under on the back nine and carded three total birdies and now has the second-most birdies among the field (five).
 
Morgan posted the biggest turnaround of the event for the Monarchs. He bettered his score by five strokes, turning in a 1-over 72. The senior from Tappahannock, Virginia leaped nine spots up the leaderboard and now enters Sunday in a tie for 23rd.


 
Rasmus Konradsson fired a second-straight 74 and is tied for 17th. He notched a pair of birdies on the back nine.
 
Jakob Henriksson shot a 76 on Saturday and is tied for 31st. Kazuki Yamauchi carded an 87.
 
Dayton and Elon recorded tournament-best 289s on Saturday to make big moves up the leaderboard. The Flyers now lead the field at 21-over 589. The Phoenix jumped six spots into third place at 26-over 594, just one stroke ahead of the Monarchs.
 
Propelled by a 1-under 70 in the second round, Butler's Logan Sabinis tops a congested leaderboard at 1-over 143. In all, 15 players sit within four strokes of the lead.
 
The Monarchs begin the final round tomorrow at 8:27 a.m.
