NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion and ESPN Radio 94.1 have partnered together for Throwback Thursday Monarch Rewinds to air great ODU games of the past. This week's rewind is quarterback Taylor Heinicke's collegiate debut on October 1, 2011, against UMass.
"I've been here at the station for 21 of the 27-year partnership with ODU Sports. We are excited to bring back some nostalgic games to re-air for ODU fans and alumni to reminisce," said Keith Barton, Vice President and General Manager of Max Media of Hampton Roads. "We can't wait to get back to live sports and events here in Hampton Roads, but for the short term, I hope everyone enjoys some ODU Sports Radio!"
ODU play by play announcer Ted Alexander and football color analyst Andy Mashaw are on the call.
The Monarchs jumped out to a 25-0 lead over the Minutemen behind three first half touchdown passes from Thomas DeMarco. However, UMass scored consecutive touchdowns to end the first half with a 25-12 score, and DeMarco went down with an ankle injury.
UMass came out in the third quarter with two more touchdowns to take a 26-25 lead. ODU blocked a punt for a safety and Heinicke tossed his first career touchdown pass to Larry Pinkard and the Monarchs never looked back.
"It was fun going back into the archives and digging up some of the greatest moments in ODU Athletics," ODU Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander said. "Not only to relive the games but also the feel of the game and the crowd all at the same time. We hope you enjoy it.
