NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2020 honors for Men's Tennis University Division All-State teams on Friday morning, as Old Dominion's Francois Musitelli and Luca Maldoner were named to the All-State Singles First Team. Musitelli and Jannik Giesse garnered All-State Doubles First Team accolades. Joining Musitelli/Giesse on the All-State Doubles First Team were Maldoner and teammate Nicola Vidal.
Musitelli compiled an 11-1 singles record in the spring and was named the C-USA Athlete of the Week. He earned a bid to the 2019 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Musitelli was also selected to represent France at the 2019 Master U BNP Paribas.
Maldoner advanced to the finals of the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship, earning a bid to the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Cali., where he picked up a nationally ranked victory. Maldoner remained nationally ranked in singles throughout the fall and spring. He ended the spring season with an 8-2 singles record and won seven matches in a row at one point.
Musitelli and Giesse won the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Doubles Championship, earning a bid to the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Cali., where Musitelli/Giesse defeated Dartmouth's No. 9 nationally ranked tandem. These two also advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles at the ITA All-American Championships. Musitelli/Giesse remained nationally ranked by the ITA during the fall and spring seasons and ended the spring season nationally ranked No. 69 in doubles.
Maldoner and Vidal ended the spring season nationally ranked No. 35 in doubles, which helped propel Maldoner to being named the C-USA Athlete of the Month in the fall and Conference USA Athlete of the Week twice in spring.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
