The ODUSports.com staff has put together the top-10 list counting down the Greatest Moments of the 2019-20 Athletic Year, presented by Cox Business. We continue the countdown today with No. 5. Check back each Wednesday as we take a look at the top moments of the year and get closer to the No. 1 moment.
Kyle Battle Hits Walk-off Single to Defeat Rutgers, 8-7
The baseball Monarchs would take on Big Ten opponent Rutgers in a non-conference weekend series at the Bud beginning on March 6. In game two of the series, Kyle Battle capped a three-run ninth inning rally with a walk-off single as the ODU baseball team overcame an early 5-0 deficit to defeat Rutgers 8-7 on March 7.
Old Dominion trailed 7-5 to begin the bottom of the ninth, but Jared Hancock led off the inning with a single and Chris Dengler followed with a single. Matt Burch knocked in pinch-runner Jay Tarkenton with ODU's third-straight single and Tommy Bell poked one through the right side to tie the score at seven. That set the stage for Battle as he knocked a base hit into right center to score Burch for the walk-off win.
ODU went on to sweep Rutgers with an 11-1 win on Sunday. Battled compiled four RBIs, one triple and one home run throughout the weekend.
