NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team (5-1) outlasted SMU (7-2) by a 4-3 score on Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Monarchs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, only to have the Mustangs race back and tie the match, but it was Tomislav Podvinski who came from behind to win sets two and three to lift ODU to victory.
"What a fantastic dual match," ODU head coach Dominic Mueller said. "This was one of those matches you hate to see one team lose. Huge respect to SMU for their fight. They had their backs against the wall with us going up 3-0 and next thing you know they have three dual match points. For 'Tommy' to keep his composure in that situation was amazing to see. He has been a great leader for us. Overall this is a great team win. I'm excited to come back Sunday against another strong opponent."
Old Dominion is 4-0 when playing at home so far this season.
The Tennis Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11:00 a.m., when ODU welcomes Nebraska (1-3) to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
SMU and Nebraska will play each other on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
