NORFOLK, Va. -- A combination of great pitching, solid defense and a few timely hits was all Old Dominion needed on Saturday to clinch its sixth consecutive series win.
The Monarchs (31-18, 13-13) defeated Marshall (24-25, 11-14) by a score of 6-3 at the Bud Metheny Complex to take a 2-0 series lead.
Relievers Nick Pantos and Ryne Moore held the Herd offense in check, as the duo combined for 7.1 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen.
Pantos earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in 5.1 innings and striking out five. Moore picked up the two-inning save, the first of his ODU career.

Offensively, Matt Schwarz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a key 2-out, 2-RBI single in the third inning that put ODU ahead, 4-2. Andy Garriola also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Overall, eight of ODU's nine starters either scored a run or drove in a run.
The win brings ODU to .500 in league play, an impressive turnaround after the Monarchs were 1-9 through their first 10 C-USA games.
ODU goes for the series sweep tomorrow on Senior Day at 1 p.m. ET.
Senior right-hander Morgan Maguire (1-4, 8.18 ERA) gets the start for the Monarchs against Marshall's Ryan Capuano (1-2, 5.85 ERA).
