NORFOLK, Va. -- Will Morgan had two home runs and Andy Garriola hit a grand slam, but it was not enough for Old Dominion against No. 12 East Carolina on Wednesday evening at the Bud Metheny Complex, as the Monarchs fell, 10-7.
East Carolina (31-10), ranked 12th in this week's D1Baseball Top 25, built a 10-2 lead entering the ninth inning, but Old Dominion (24-16) mounted a late rally.
Garriola's grand slam with one out in the ninth made it a four-run game and then Morgan, who went 3-for-5, connected for his second solo shot of the evening to pull the Monarchs within three, but the rally ended there.
ODU had as many hits as the Pirates with 12, but ECU was 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The loss drops ODU to 9-2 in midweek games and 17-5 in non-conference.
Bryce Windham and Matt Burch both had two hits apiece at the top of the Monarch order, while Jared Hancock came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Jason Hartline received the loss, allowing two runs in three innings.
Up next, the Monarchs head to sunny Boca Raton for a Conference USA series with Florida Atlantic.
