NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion reeled off its third consecutive Conference USA series win by defeating FIU, 7-2, in an Easter Sunday rubber match at the Bud Metheny Complex.
The three straight series for Old Dominion (24-15, 7-11) come after the Monarchs dropped their first three in conference play.
Ryne Moore provided the Monarchs with a strong start, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings of work, while striking out five. Moore improved to 6-2 with a 4.09 ERA. In six home starts, Moore is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA.
The quality start from Moore was the first by an ODU pitcher since Morgan Maguire at William & Mary on March 26 and the first in a conference game since Moore's shutout against Charlotte on March 17.
It was a 1-1 game through five innings, until Andy Garriola hit a solo home run to right in the sixth inning, chasing FIU starter Franco Aleman. Garriola went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs.
Then in the seventh, a Vinnie Pasquantino RBI double ignited a five-frame to blow the game wide open and give ODU a 7-1 lead entering the eighth. Ryan Teschko also had a big RBI base knock in the seventh.
