SAN ANTONIO -- For the third time in the last five games Old Dominion went to extra innings, but it was UTSA who prevailed on Friday night in San Antonio, eking out a 4-3 win in 10 innings at Roadrunner Field.
Each time Old Dominion (19-14, 3-10) scored, the Roadrunners (15-19, 6-7) had an answer.
Will Morgan put ODU ahead in the top half of fourth inning with a solo home run, his second consecutive game with a homer. UTSA then answered in the bottom half with an RBI single.
Then in the eighth, Matt Burch delivered a 2-out, 2-RBI double to push the Monarchs back ahead, but a Nick Thornquist 2-run homer tied things in the bottom half.
The score held until the 10th, when UTSA's Bryan Sturges hit a line drive down the left field line that bounced off the foul line to score a runner from second for the walk-off hit.
Aaron Holiday highlighted the evening on the mound for ODU, throwing four shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
Last weekend, ODU dropped an extra-inning game on Friday, but battled back to win the series at UAB.
Game 2 is tomorrow at a moved-up time of 5 p.m. ET. Ryne Moore (5-2, 4.05 ERA) will take the mound against UTSA's Slater Foust (4-1, 2.25 ERA).
