LEXINGTON, Va. -- In this year's second meeting between ODU head coach Chris Finwood and his son and VMI assistant Grey Finwood, Old Dominion fell to the Keydets, 7-6, on Wednesday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Culver Lamb (2-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI) homered twice for Old Dominion (12-30), who fell to 3-6 in midweek games in 2018.
Lamb hit a towering solo shot in the fifth and then followed that with a three-run bomb in his next at-bat in the sixth. Jimbo Reemsnyder (2-4, 2B, RBI) also had a big day for the Monarchs, throwing out two runners on the basepaths as well.
VMI (24-21) scored all seven of its runs off of ODU starter Hunter Gregory (4 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), who received the loss. The Monarch bullpen came on to throw four innings of shutout relief to keep ODU within striking distance. Jason Hartline (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) and Connor Muly (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) both had strong outings out of the pen.
The teams split the season series for the second consecutive year, after ODU defeated the Keydets, 19-4, back in March in Norfolk.
Up next, the Monarchs continue their road trip at Marshall this weekend in Conference USA action.
