HOUSTON -- Old Dominion dropped game two of the series at Rice, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.
With the win, Rice (14-19, 4-7 C-USA) wins the weekend series.
Six of the game's seven runs were scored in the first three innings, as Rice carried a 4-2 lead into the fourth. From there, Owl starting pitcher Roel Garcia and the Old Dominion (10-19, 3-8 C-USA) bullpen took control as the game remained 4-2 through seven.
The Monarchs then trimmed the lead to 4-3 on Jared Share's sacrifice fly in the eighth, but ODU was then retired in order in the ninth.
Jason Hartline (2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 K) received the loss in his second career start. The Monarch bullpen consiting of Connor Muly (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R), Isaiah Nelson (1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K) and Erik Stock (3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K) combined to throw six frames of shutout relief.
At the plate, Bryce Windham (2-4, 2B, 2 R) and Vinnie Pasquantino (2-2, R) were the lone Monarchs with two hits. Tommy Bell (1-4, RBI), Stock (1-4, RBI) and Share (0-1, RBI, SF) drove in the runs for ODU. Share's RBI was the first of his career.
The Monarchs are now 4-5 in one-run games in 2018.
The series finale is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
