HOUSTON -- Old Dominion was unable to get anything going off of Rice starting pitcher Matt Canterino and fell to the Owls, 9-0, in the series opener on Friday evening at Reckling Park.
Canterino, a highly-touted 2019 MLB Draft prospect, was touching 96 with the fastball and allowed just one hit in eight scoreless innings. Rice (13-19, 3-7 C-USA) carried a 3-0 lead into the seventh, before breaking the game open with a run in the seventh and five more in the eighth.
For Old Dominion (10-18, 3-7 C-USA), starting pitcher Morgan Maguire battled through seven strong innings. The junior right-hander allowed four earned runs in those seven innings and struck out a career-high eight in the first Friday start of his career.
Cory Alexander II had both of ODU's hits. The multi-hit game was Alexander's first of the season and the second of his career.
Game two is set for tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET.
