NORFOLK, Va. -- For the first time since 2016, Old Dominion was swept in a home series, falling to No. 11 Southern Miss, 9-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Southern Miss (32-11, 16-4 C-USA), the league's top offensive team, scored in each of the first three innings to build a 4-1 lead through three.
RBI hits from Bryce Windham (3-4, 2B, RBI) and Craig Lopez (1-4, RBI) kept the Monarchs (12-29, 5-16 C-USA) within striking distance, as USM led 5-2 after six. However, the Golden Eagles scored two runs apiece in the seventh and ninth innings to pull away for the series-clinching win.
Southern Miss posted 15 hits to ODU's nine. Aside from Windham, Matt Schwarz (2-3, BB) also notched a multi-hit game. Schwarz, who missed the previous 12 games due to illness before the series, hit a team-best .455 on the weekend.
Jason Hartline (4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) received the loss on the mound for ODU.
Up next, the Monarchs begin a four-game road trip on Wednesday at VMI. First pitch is at 6 p.m. ET.
