NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion posted 10 or more hits for the seventh time in the last eight games, but Southern Miss, behind its high-powered offense, won game two, 9-4, to clinch the weekend series on Saturday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
The Monarchs (12-28, 5-15 C-USA) totaled 10 hits, including eight off of starting pitcher Stevie Powers, whom ODU chased after just four innings. However, Southern Miss (31-11, 15-4 C-USA), behind a 15-hit attack, scored five runs in the final three innings to pull away for the victory.
The offensive battle came a day after USM eked out a narrow 2-0 victory on Friday night in a pitchers' duel.
Erik Stock (3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Matt Schwarz (3-4, R) accounted for six of ODU's ten hits, while Jimbo Reemsnyder (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) had a big two-out, two-RBI double in the fourth inning.
On the mound, Morgan Maguire (6 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) received the loss.
The Monarchs have yet to win a weekend series in 2018.
The series finale is set for tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET.
