NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion and UAB, who won the series, split a doubleheader on Saturday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Behind a complete-game shutout from Morgan Maguire, Old Dominion (11-23, 4-11 C-USA) cruised to a 12-0 victory in game one. UAB (16-18, 8-7 C-USA) then scored three runs in the top of the ninth in game two to pull out a 7-5 victory and steal the series.
In game one, Maguire (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K) became the first Monarch since Adam Bainbridge last season to threw a complete-game shutout. Maguire has now gone at least seven innings in three consecutive starts and has six quality starts on the season.
At the plate, Tommy Bell (3-5, HR, 2 RBI), Will Morgan (2-5, HR, 4 RBI) and Brian Morley (2-5, 3B, HR, 2 RBI) all homered, as ODU scored three runs in the third, six in the fourth and three more in the seventh for the lop-sided victory. Bell's home run was the first of his ODU career.
In game two, Erik Stock's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave the Monarchs a 5-4 lead heading into the ninth, but the Blazers scored three runs in the top of the ninth to grab the come-from-behind, series-clinching victory.
Cory Alexander II (3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Culver Lamb (2-4, 2B, 3B, RBI) led ODU offensively in game two, while Connor Muly (4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB) had his best relief outing of his ODU career.
The Monarchs have still yet to win a weekend series.
Up next, ODU heads to newly-renovated English Field in Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET in midweek action.
