NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion dropped its opening game of Conference USA play, falling to Florida Atlantic, 10-5, in the series opener on Friday night at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Florida Atlantic (14-4, 1-0 C-USA) never trailed in the game after scoring three runs in the first inning.
The Owls extended their lead to as much as six at 8-2 in the fifth inning, but Old Dominion (7-10, 0-1 C-USA) plated three in the bottom of the fifth to cut the gap to three. However, FAU added insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings to seal the win.
Vinnie Pasquantino led ODU offensively, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. In the last three games, Pasquantino is hitting .733 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Matt Schwarz also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles.
On the mound, Erik Stock received the loss in his first collegiate start, allowing four runs in two innings of work.
Jake Miednik, a preseason all-conference selection, earned the win for FAU. Miednik allowed four earned runs in six innings.
The series resumes tomorrow at 3 p.m. with Brett Smith taking the mound against FAU's Kyle Marman.
