ODU Travels to Charlotte for C-USA Match

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (6-1-2, 3-0-0 C-USA) men’s soccer team travels down to Charlotte to compete against the 49ers (3-2-3, 1-0-2 C-USA) on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7PM. The Monarchs sit atop the C-USA standings after their most recent victory, which was over No. 13 Kentucky on Sept. 30, 2-0. 

Goalkeeper Mertcan Akar received Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Akar has had a successful season thus far, notching seven saves in the game against Kentucky and 30 saves overall. Additionally, Akar has tallied his fourth shutout of the season. Along with Akar’s considerable performances defensively, the ODU defensive force led by Ryan McLaughlin, Garrett Walke, Jimmy Filerman, and Fox Slotemaker continues to hold opposing offensive efforts back. 

Offensively, trailing close behind Brandon Perdue, junior Max Wilschrey has four goals on the season. Junior Niko Klosterhalfen has also made a substantial input this season, including a goal and assist against Kentucky, a game-winning goal over VCU, and a goal in the Monarch shutout over Oakland.

The Monarchs make the trip for their second road match of the season, their first at FAU for a 3-0 victory.

The Monarchs received (28) votes in this weeks United Soccer Coaches Poll. The last time the Monarchs were ranked was the week of Aug. 29. In Conference USA play, the Monarchs remain the only team undefeated.

Rookie Recognition
Freshman Brandon Perdue has led the Monarchs with 16 points so far this season. Perdue also leads the pack with six goals and four assists, respectively. He leads the Monarchs offensively with a colossal 26 shots.

About Charlotte
The 49ers (3-2-3, 1-0-2 C-USA) are most recently coming off a double overtime draw against C-USA opponent UAB. Their two losses come from Coastal Carolina (4-5-0, 0-1-0 Sun Belt), and No. 6 Clemson (8-2-0, 2-2 ACC). Offensively, their leading scorer, redshirt junior Daniel Bruce has six points on the season, including two goals and two assists. 

Two goalkeepers have spent time in the net for the 49ers. Elliot Panicco has spent a majority of the time as goalkeeper for the 49ers, notching 12 saves for the season thus far.

Series History
ODU takes the advantage in the series, 8-3-4. The last time the two met, Charlotte took the match in Norfolk.

The Monarchs return home on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the ODU Soccer Complex for a 6PM kickoff against non-conference foe Coastal Carolina.
