NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s soccer team (7-3-2, 4-0-0 C-USA) will host Marshall (6-6-1, 2-3-0 C-USA) at the ODU Soccer Complex on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7PM. The broadcast will be streamed live by beIn Connect, which is online only. The Monarchs last played a league game on Oct. 06 against Charlotte, where they were victorious, 2-1.
The Monarchs are coming off a double overtime loss against No. 4 UNC in Cary, N.C. Junior Max Wilschrey scored the lone goal for the Monarchs and tallied his sixth goal of the season. Wislchrey now splits the lead with Brandon Perdue for goals on the season with six.
Mertcan Akar topped his season high saves with 10 on Tuesday night.
The Monarchs currently remain undefeated in league play and sit in second place behind FIU on the standings with 12 points.
Dynamic Defense
The Monarchs defense made up of Ryan McLaughlin, Jimmy Filerman, Fox Slotemaker, and Garrett Walke have held opponents to 18 goals this season. The quartet has started in all 11 games together. At No. 4 UNC, the ODU defense held back the Tar Heel offense until the 88th minute.
About Marshall
Most recently, Marshall is coming off a loss to Liberty, 1-0 on Tuesday night. Prior to that loss, the Herd topped Kentucky in a key conference match, 1-0. The Herd sits sixth on the C-USA standings. In road contests, Marshall is 1-4-1.
Series History
Last time out, the Monarchs defeated the Herd in overtime on the road. ODU also holds the series advantage, leading 3-2-0. The first time the two played was in 1983, ODU topped Marshall, 3-0. The Herds leading scorer, Lewis Knight had nine goals and three assists on the season.
