Ricks' Goal With 18 Seconds Left in 2nd Half Brings ODU to 1-1 Draw at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – With 18 seconds remaining in regulation, a Kyra Ricks goal forced overtime and ultimately a draw for the Old Dominion women's soccer team (2-2-2) at UNCW (2-4-1) on Thursday night.

“I am proud of our character tonight, we showed that in abundance,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “I thought we actually had a good first half despite being down a goal. In the second half we pushed and pushed and great credit to our team to give it there all and tie the game up with just seconds on the clock. We are learning how to be tough when needed and that for me is really important for us.”

Molly McGarry’s second goal of the season gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute off an Ashley Johnson assist. The Seahawks took the 1-0 lead with them at halftime after outshooting the Monarchs 5-3 and holding a 2-0 advantage in corners for the opening 45 minutes.

Kyra Ricks’ second goal of the season occurred with just 18 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Natalie Johnson was credited with her first assist of the year. The Monarchs outshot the Seahawks 6-2 in the second half.

UNCW took the only shots (4) and corners (3) of the two overtimes.  

The Seahawks entered the match with three of their four losses coming to nationally ranked opponents: No. 9 North Carolina (0-2), No. 11 Virginia (0-2) and No. 13 Duke (0-1).

Old Dominion will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 15, when the Monarchs welcome WKU to the ODU Soccer Complex for a 7:00 p.m. start. Friday’s contest will be televised on beIN Network as their ‘Game of the Week’. The TV window will start at 8:00 p.m. ET. The match will air live on beIN Connect (the online digital network) and air on a one hour delay on the beIN Network (the TV network).
