Lucky 13 Strikes to Push Lady Monarchs Past The Chanticleers

CONWAY, S.C. – Lauren Irvine secures the Old Dominion lacrosse victory with a goal in the 59th minute of action to put the Lady Monarchs up 13-12 over the Chanticleers Sunday afternoon in ASUN conference action. Old Dominion improves to 6-5, 2-2 in the ASUN while Coastal Carolina falls to 6-5, 3-1 ASUN.

The Lady Monarchs held a 12-7 advantage with 12:46 remaining when Cydney Tutchton connected with Sophia Richie for the ODU goal. Coastal Carolina did not back down as the Chanticleers scored five unanswered goals to tie the game at 12 all with 5:24 remaining to play.

With 68 seconds remaining in regulation and overtime looming, Irvine hit the back of the net on a pass from Connor Carson scoring the game-winning 13th goal.

Old Dominion started the game off strong with five unanswered goals to take a 5-0 lead in the first nine minutes of play. Tutchton scored first for ODU off the assist from Katie Miller.

Carson scored back-to-back goals in the course of three minutes followed by Morgan Marrale off an assist from Richie. Tutchton scored her second of the game with 21:24 to play in the first to give ODU the 5-0 lead.

Coastal got on the score board in the 15th minute when Courtney Genovese connected on an unassisted goal. The Lady Monarchs answered as Tutchton scored her third goal of the half on a free position shot to go up 6-1. The teams both scored twice in the final 11 minutes of the first half as the Lady Monarchs entered halftime with an 8-3 lead.

The second half was Coastal’s game as they went on a 9-4 run to tie the game 12 all with five minutes remaining off the Genovese goal.

Marrale scored her second goal of the game from Megan Topper to give ODU a 9-4 lead. Tutchton collected her fourth followed by Carson’s third with 22:26 remaining in regulation holding an 11-5 advantage.

CCU went on a 7-1 run tying ODU at 12 all with time running down. With 68 seconds remaining in the game, sophomore Irvine, scored the 13th goal to help the Lady Monarchs win the game 13-12 over Coastal Carolina who was undefeated in conference action.

Maggi Buckley had 12 saves in the game and improved her record to 6-5, 2-2 in net for the Lady Monarchs. Buckley and Alyssa Sebesto each tallied five ground balls while Natalie Ledwitz led the team with four draw controls.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Thursday, April 13, as they travel to Michigan to face Central Michigan in a 7 p.m. ASUN conference showdown in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
