MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Jared Young hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 12th and Craig Lopez tossed 4.2 innings of shutout relief to lead Old Dominion to a series clinching 5-3 win in 12 innings at Middle Tennessee on Saturday evening.
With the score tied 3-3 in the top of the 12th with a runner on second and one out, Young drove a 2-1 breaking ball over the right field wall for his fourth home run in the last three games.
Lopez, who earned his second victory in as many days, then fired a scoreless frame in the bottom half of the inning to provide Old Dominion (24-8, 9-2 C-USA) the series-clinching victory.
ODU jumped out to an early lead, as Vinnie Pasquantino's RBI double gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the first. ODU then extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth, before Middle Tennessee (14-17, 3-8 C-USA) scored its first run of the game in the sixth.
Starting pitcher Adam Bainbridge, who entered the game with 16 straight scoreless innings, fell just two outs shy of tying the ODU record of consecutive shutout innings of 22 set by All-Americans Anthony Shawler in 2007 and Bob Walton in 1962.
The Blue Raiders then tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with two unearned runs, as all three MTSU runs were unearned. The teams then exchanged scoreless innings before Young's game-winning blast in the top of the 12th.
At the plate, Young finished the day 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs, while Zach Rutherford recorded his team-leading 14th multi-hit game with a 2-for-6 performance, including one RBI.
On the mound, Bainbridge went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs, zero earned, while striking out three and walking none. Lopez then finished the game, throwing 4.2 frames of 2-hit shutout ball, including four strikeouts.
ODU and MTSU conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT on CUSA.tv and STAR 1310. Freshman lefty John Wilson is expected to start against Cody Puckett.
