NORFOLK, Va. -- Jared Young went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Sam Sinnen tossed six innings of one-run ball to lead Old Dominion to a 14-5 win over Marshall in the series opener on Friday evening at the Bud Metheny Complex.

Old Dominion (29-12, 13-6 C-USA) tied its season high with 18 hits, marking the third consecutive game ODU has had 13 hits or more. Over the last three games, the Monarchs have scored 36 runs on 49 hits.

Marshall (20-22, 8-11 C-USA) grabbed a brief early lead with a run in the top of the first, but ODU answered with two runs in both the first and second innings.

After some early trouble, starting pitcher Sam Sinnen held Marshall scoreless for five consecutive frames, allowing the Monarchs to break the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. ODU then followed with three in the sixth and two in the seventh to cruise to the nine-run victory.

Sinnen, who improved to 2-3 on the year, allowed one earned run over six innings of work, scattering eight hits. The Virginia Beach native struck out two and walked none. Morgan Maguire and Michael Blanchard then combined to throw the final three innings of relief. Overall, the Monarch pitching staff did not issue a walk.

At the plate, all nine starters had a hit for ODU, including six who had multi-hit games. Young, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games, went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs, while Nick Walker went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Kyle Beam, who started behind the plate, went 2-for-3 with a home run, while Kyle Battle, Zach Rutherford and Vinnie Pasquantino each recorded two hits and two RBIs.

Overall, the Monarchs hit .471 with runners in scoring position and had the leadoff man on in six of the eight innings. ODU, as a team, also tallied seven extra-base hits, while striking out just twice.

The series resumes tomorrow at 3 p.m. at The Bud. Senior lefty Adam Bainbridge, who is 6-1 with a 1.84 ERA, is projected to start against Marshall's left-hander Jacob Niggemeyer.
