HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Old Dominion dropped the opening game of a three-game set at No. 16 Southern Miss, 10-2, on Friday evening at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss (30-10, 13-3 C-USA) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third inning with a six-run frame. The Golden Eagles then scored a run in the fourth and fifth to secure the 10-2 victory.
Old Dominion (26-12, 10-6 C-USA) was led at the plate by Kyle Battle and Jared Young. Battle, who hit in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career, went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Young also went 2-for-4 for his ninth multi-hit performance in the last 10 games. Zach Rutherford and Vinnie Pasquantino both went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
On the mound, Sam Sinnen fell to 1-3 on the season, after allowing nine runs in four innings. Morgan Maguire tossed four solid frames of relief, allowing zero earned runs and striking out four.
Maguire's four innings of relief were the most for the sophomore since he threw five in a start against LIU Brooklyn in the second game of the season.
The series resumes tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on CUSA.tv and STAR 1310. The game time was moved up due to expected weather in the Hattiesburg area.
Adam Bainbridge, who is 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA, is projected to start against USM's Hayden Roberts.

USM now leads the all-time series, 3-0 ... Zach Rutherford now has an RBI in seven consecutive games ... Rutherford leads the team with 35 RBIs ... Jared Young extended his hitting streak to 12 games ... Young recorded his 14th multi-hit game, which is tied for second on the team with Vinnie Pasquantino and is Young's ninth multi-hit game in the last 10 ... Morgan Maguire's 4 innings were the most since he threw 5 against LIU Brooklyn on Feb. 18 ... Tomorrow's Game 2 has been moved up to 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT due to expected weather.
