NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion shutout Charlotte for the second consecutive game to win the weekend series over the 49ers with a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
John Wilson threw seven shutout innings and Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run home run in the sixth to lead Old Dominion (22-6, 7-2 C-USA) to the series-clinching victory, as ODU is now 6-0 in weekend series so far this season.
Following Wilson's seven scoreless frames, Craig Lopez came in for the two-inning save, as the Monarchs blanked Charlotte (16-12, 5-4 C-USA) for the second straight game. It marked the first time since 1990 that the 49ers were shutout in consecutive contests and is the fourth shutout for the Monarchs this season.
Overall, the Monarch pitching staff tossed 23 consecutive scoreless innings to end the series and held Charlotte to a team average of .163 during the three games. The combined shutout by Wilson and Lopez came a day after Adam Bainbridge tossed a complete-game shutout last night.
Wilson allowed just three hits and walked none in seven innings, while striking out four. The freshman from New Jersey settled into a dominant groove in the middle innings, retiring 17 straight from the second to seventh innings.
The pitchers' duel opened with five scoreless frames, before Pasquantino's home run, his second of the season, provided ODU with a 2-0 lead in the sixth. The homer also extended Pasquantino's team-high hitting streak to 14 games.
Charlotte put runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth, but Lopez escaped the jam with a two-out strikeout. The Monarchs then added an insurance run in the eighth, as Nick Walker scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Rutherford. Walker had a solid game out of the leadoff spot for ODU, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.
With the win, the Monarchs remain in a tie for second in the Conference USA standings with Florida Atlantic, behind No. 25 Southern Miss.
Up next, the Monarchs open up a five-game road trip with a matchup at No. 18 Virginia on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Davenport Field.
