NORFOLK, Va. -- Adam Bainbridge threw eight shutout innings and Kyle Battle hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to lead Old Dominion over LA Tech, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
With a runner on third and two outs, Battle chopped a single through the left side, scoring Jared Young from third for the walk-off victory.
Old Dominion (26-10, 10-4 C-USA) is now 9-1 this season when coming off of a loss, while the walk-off win was ODU's fourth this season.
Bainbridge, who is now 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA on the year, continued to dominate on the mound, as the senior lefty carried a no-hitter into the eighth. Jonathan Washam's leadoff single in the eighth was the only hit Bainbridge surrendered.
Overall, Bainbridge went eight innings, scattering a hit and two walks, while striking out a career-high eight. The Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, native has now thrown 31.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Behind Bainbridge's eight shutout frames and runs in the third and fourth inning, ODU carried a 2-0 lead into the ninth. However, LA Tech (22-13, 5-9 C-USA) plated two runs in the top of the ninth off of Craig Lopez to tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the inning, Jared Young led off with a single and then a LA Tech error on a Zach Rutherford grounder set up first and second with no outs. Vinnie Pasquantino grounded into a double play to move Young to third, before Battle's game-winning hit.
At the plate, Kurt Sinnen went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Nick Walker and Young both registered two-hit games and each scored a run. On the mound, Lopez earned the win.
The rubber match is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m. on CUSA.tv. Freshman John Wilson is expected to start for ODU against the Bulldogs' Nate Harris.
