NORFOLK, Va. -- Adam Bainbridge threw a four-hit complete-game shutout in game two and Old Dominion split Saturday's doubleheader against Charlotte in Conference USA action at the Bud Metheny Complex.

In a pair of pitcher's duels, Charlotte (16-11, 5-3 C-USA) won game one, 3-1, before Old Dominion (21-6, 6-2 C-USA) topped the 49ers, 2-0, in game two behind Bainbridge's historic performance.

Bainbridge became the first Monarch since Ryan Yarbrough in 2013 to throw a complete-game shutout, while the complete game is Bainbridge's second of his career.

In a pitchers' duel in Game 1, Charlotte's Colton Laws outgunned Sam Sinnen to lead the 49ers to the 3-1 victory. Sinnen tied his career high with eight innings, which was set last weekend at UTSA, but allowed a two-run home run in the fourth inning for what proved to be the winning runs for Charlotte.

Overall, Sinnen, who suffered his first loss of the year, allowed three runs on seven hits, while walking none and striking out four. Laws, who is now 4-0 with a 1.30 ERA for Charlotte, went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits.

The 49ers scored a run in the bottom of the second and then Zack Smith extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run in the fourth. Zach Rutherford drove in the Monarchs' lone run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, scoring Nick Walker. J.D. Prochaska replaced Laws in the eighth and pitched the final two innings for the save.

At the plate for ODU, Rutherford and Vinnie Pasquantino combined for four of the Monarchs' five hits.

In Game 2, Bainbridge struck out a career-high seven and scattered four hits and one walk over his nine scoreless frames. The senior lefty has now pitched eight or more innings and not allowed more than two earned runs in three straight starts.

After five scoreless innings, Cory Alexander II scored Kyle Battle with an infield single in the bottom of the sixth to give ODU its first lead of the day. The Monarchs then added an insurance run in the seventh, as Battle drove in Rutherford from second with a single to center.

Bainbridge then retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced to earn the victory and improve to 6-1 with a 1.31 ERA on the season, including a 3-0 mark with a 1.07 ERA in C-USA play.

Offensively, Battle led ODU, going 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two walks. Pasquantino, who finished the day with three hits, also extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 with a single in the third inning.

ODU and Charlotte will decide the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at The Bud. John Wilson is projected to get the nod against Zach Flanagan.
