LYNCHBURG, Va. – Old Dominion lacrosse returned to it’s winning ways after defeating Liberty 11-8 on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. Connor Carson led the Lady Monarchs with four goals while Cydney Tuchton and Sophia Richie added hat tricks of their own to improve ODU’s record to 3-2.
“We played hard today and against a tough Liberty team,” said head coach Heather Holt. “I am proud of our teams effort and fight today. We were determined to win this game, even when we were down, that shows a lot of heart in our players.”
Carson and Richie led the team with four points apiece. Carson’s came on her four goals, while Richie had three goals and an assist for the Lady Monarchs. Tutchton (3) and Megan Cameron (1) combined for the remaining four goals while Katie Miller and Megan Topper joined Richie in the assist column.
Maggi Buckley had eight saves on the day putting her at 50 saves on the season. Kerri Caruso and Buckley led the team with five ground balls and three caused turnovers each while Richie led with two draw controls.
Old Dominion controlled the second half scoring three unanswered goals right out the gate to take an 8-6 lead (19:39). A Liberty goal by Nikki Stumpf brought the lead down to one, but the Lady Monarchs answered with a 3-1 run to close out the game and pick up their third win 11-8.
The Flames opened the first half scoring two goals in the first minute and a half of play. ODU tied the game two all in the 16th minute of action before Liberty scored three unanswered goals to go up 5-2 with 10:45 remaining. Carson scored her second goal of the day that spurred a 3-1 run by the Lady Monarchs to close out the first half.
Liberty held a slight advantage in the first half leading by one on the scoreboard while also controlling the shots 17-11 and ground balls 14-13. ODU led 6-5 in draw controls and 1-0 in free position shots.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Saturday, March 11, as the return to Norfolk for the home opener after a five game road trip that opened the season. Old Dominion plays host to American at the L.R. Hill Complex with the game set to start at 1 p.m.
