NORFOLK, Va. -- Adam Bainbridge allowed one earned run in eight innings and Zach Rutherford hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the fifth to lead Old Dominion to an 11-5 victory in game two at UTSA on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
Old Dominion (19-4, 5-0 C-USA) has now won nine straight games, while the 11-run performance marks the seventh time this season that ODU has scored 10 or more runs. The victory also clinches the series for ODU, who had lost 2-of-3 to UTSA (10-11, 1-4 C-USA) in each of the last two seasons.
Bainbridge scattered five hits and one walk over eight innings to improve to 5-1 on the season and lower his ERA to 1.62. The two runs Bainbridge did allow came in the first inning, with one of the two being unearned. The senior lefty has now gone at least five innings and not allowed more than two earned runs in all six starts this season.
UTSA, for the second straight day, scored the game's first run, scoring two runs in the first, including a leadoff home run by Jesse Baker. However, Bainbridge settled in after the first, firing seven scoreless frames and retiring 14 straight Roadrunners from the first to fifth innings.
After a Jared Young sacrifice fly cut the 2-0 lead in half in the fourth, Zach Rutherford belted a two-out three-run home run in the fifth to provide the Monarchs a lead that they would not relinquish. The home run was the first of the season for Rutherford and the third of his career.
The Monarchs added two more runs in the sixth, both on wild pitches, and then posted a run in the eighth and three runs in the ninth for insurance.
At the plate, Culver Lamb went 3-for-5 with a run and Kyle Battle, who has now knocked in seven runs during the UTSA series, went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
In addition, Nick Walker went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs and Cory Alexander II went 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and two stolen bases off the bench. The RBI and extra-base hit were the first of Alexander's career.
Overall, the Monarchs hit .529 with two outs (9-17) and .556 (5-9) with runners in scoring position.
The three-game series comes to a close tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT on CUSA.tv and STAR 1310. Freshman John Wilson is projected to start against UTSA's left-hander Steven Dressler.
