NORFOLK, Va. -- Sam Sinnen pitched a career-high eight innings and Old Dominion belted a season-high 15 hits as the Monarchs defeated UTSA, 9-1, on Friday evening at Roadrunner Field.
Old Dominion (18-4, 4-0 C-USA) has now won eight consecutive games, the longest winning streak for the Monarchs since the 2006 team won 18 straight in 2006.
Sinnen scattered five hits and two walks over eight innings, while striking out three. The lone run the senior right-hander allowed was an earned run in the second inning on an RBI double that tipped off the glove of Culver Lamb in the left field. At the plate, Kyle Battle went 1-for-4 with a home run, the first of his career, and four RBIs, while Jared Young went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
After UTSA (10-10, 1-3 C-USA) grabbed the early 1-0 lead on the unearned run in the bottom of the second, the Monarchs responded with two runs in the top of the third. Battle's three-run shot in the top of the fourth extended the lead to 5-1, before ODU busted the game open with a four spot in the seventh.
Following Sinnen's eight frames of one-run ball, freshman Corey Klak then came in to toss a scoreless ninth. The ODU pitching staff has now allowed two or less runs in five of the last seven games.
Offensively, eight of the nine ODU starters recorded a hit, including five Monarchs who registered multi-hit games. In addition to Battle and Young, Zach Rutherford went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Kurt Sinnen and Will Morgan both went 2-for-5.
The season-high 15 hits marked the ninth time this season that ODU has had 10+ hits and tied the season high of 15 hits against both Princeton and LIU Brooklyn.
The series resumes tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET/2p.m. CT on CUSA.tv and STAR 1310. Adam Bainbridge is projected to start for ODU against UTSA's Tyler Giovanoni.
