NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s tennis team (6-1) will host Elon (1-3) on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1:00 p.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

The Tennis Monarchs:
Old Dominion started off the season defeating NC State 6-1, securing the doubles point before having their top three singles players clinch the win by dispatching NC State’s No. 37 and No. 103 nationally ranked players in the No. 1 and 2 matches. The Monarchs moved to 3-0 after defeating Richmond and Howard in a double-header on January 15th.  Adam Moundir defeated his second nationally ranked opponent of the season against Richmond, helping ODU secure a 6-1 win. Against Howard, ODU claimed a 7-0 victory Howard. Moundir, Jover Maestre and Herrera finished 2-0 in singles for the day.

ODU participated in a Pre-ITA Kick-Off in Boston, Mass. where the Monarchs moved to 5-0 on the season.  ODU defeated San Francisco on Saturday, 4-0. ODU took two doubles matches and the point with the teams of Adam Moundir/Jacob Nicolussi and Michael Weindl/Javier Jover Maestre getting wins. In singles, Moundir, Weindl and Kijametovic earned wins securing the match for ODU. On Sunday, ODU defeated Harvard 4-0, taking the doubles point, before Moundir, Kijametovic and Jover Maestre won in the first three singles matches to finish.

At the ITA Kick-Off weekend in Columbus, ODU defeated Denver side 4-0 to secure their sixth win of the season. Old Dominion won the doubles point with wins by Moundir/Nicolussi and Kijamatovi/Navarro. The match was wrapped up with ODU’s No. 3, 4, 5 matches securing wins and the 4-0 final match score in favor of the Monarchs. In the final, ODU squared off against No. 3 ranked Ohio State, in a match the Monarchs lost 4-0.

ODU started the 2017 Spring season on a positive note notching six straight wins.

ELON:
2017 Record:
1-3
Elon started the season with a loss to Duke, 6-1, recording the first point in doubles with Neal Port and Salvador Mijares winning at the No. 3 spot and Felipe Sarrasague and Mario Paccini taking the No. 1 match. In singles, Duke earned straight set wins in 5 matches to hand Elon their first loss of the season.

Elon split a doubleheader winning against Monmouth and falling to NC State the following week. Elon defeated Monmouth after losing the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches dropping the point. Elon also fell to Furman on January 26th.

Elon travels to VCU on February 4th, and will play ODU in Norfolk the following day to cap off their six-match road-trip to start the season.  

Neal Port – Redshirt Junior- Mount Kisco, N.Y.
Finished 2-0 in singles and 6-8 in doubles in the 2016 Spring season. Port and Mijares topped the season with a big win against Javier Jover Maestre and Jose Nunez Navarro of ODU.

Ranked No.42 in doubles with Salvador Mijares in the preseason ITA ranking. Port and Mijares beat the No.33 doubles team in the fall in the ITA Carolina Regionals.

Salvador Mijares -Sophomore- Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela
Ranked No. 42 in doubles with Neal Port in the preseason ITA ranking. Mijares and Port beat the No. 33 doubles team in the fall in the ITA Carolina Regionals.

Felipe Sarrasague – Sophomore- Buenos Aires, Argentina
In the 2016 Spring season, finished 15-6 primarily playing at the No. 1 or 2 position for Elon. Was named CAA Rookie of the Year and earned All-CAA First Team honors.

Mario Paccini – Sophomore- Madrid, Spain
Finished last spring with a 13-9 record in singles and went 14-4 in doubles. Was named to the All-CAA First Team and All-CAA Second Team in doubles.
