NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s soccer wins in double-overtime on a header by freshman Kaio DaSilva in the 102nd minute on Senior Night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Monarchs advance to 5-7-2 on the season (2-4-1 C-USA) and secured their spot in the 2016 C-USA Men’s Soccer Tournament, Nov. 9-13. Florida Atlantic fell to 4-10-1 (2-6 C-USA) and were knocked out of the running for a spot at the conference tournament.
The scoring started in the 53rd minute as redshirt freshman Jimmy Filerman connected with the back of the net on an unassisted goal. He retrieved the ball after a couple of defenders tried to rebound and clear the box to put the Monarchs on the board first.
Florida Atlantic tied the match in the 64th minute on the double assisted goal by Carlos Sanchis. Braxton Fuster crossed the ball into David Adejunmobi who connected with Sanchis in front of the net.
The teams remained in a deadlock for the next 37 minutes as regulation and the first overtime period came and went. It was in the 102nd minute of the match that DaSilva headed the ball into the top right corner for the game winning goal, after Sebastien Hauret passed the ball in from 40-yards out on a free kick.
ODU led the stat lines in shots 27-9, shots on goal 11-2 and corner kicks 9-5. Niko Klosterhalfen paced the Monarch offense with nine shots while DaSIlva had eight and Filerman and Hauret had three each. The two goals scored by the two freshmen were each athletes first career goals.
Alex Tiesenhausen finished the night with one save while FAU’s Phillip Hitpass stopped nine of ODU’s attacks from entering the net.
