NORFOLK, Va. -- Chrissy Horn scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the first overtime period to propel the Old Dominion field hockey team to a 3-2 OT victory over BIG EAST foe Villanova Saturday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs snapped a four-game losing skid, improving to 7-8, 3-3 (BIG EAST) while the Wildcats dropped to 4-12, 1-5 (BIG EAST).
Freshman Erin Huffman got the Lady Monarchs on the board early, firing a ball past the Villanova keeper off a penalty corner insert from Chrissy Horn in the third minute to put ODU up, 1-0.
Old Dominion carried the 1-0 lead into the half, leading the shot count, 8-3.
Early in the second half, Villanova's Abby Siana found the equalizing goal in the 40th minute off an assist from Carolynn Clark.
The Lady Monarchs responded just five minutes later when Danielle Grega tapped in a cross from Alexandria Brewer to reclaim the lead, 2-1. With the score, Grega extended her season goal count to seven.
Villanova again tied the game in the waning seconds, as Emma McLaughlin scored off a penalty corner from Kristen Mericle to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Chrissy Horn scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift ODU over Villanova, 3-2 OT.
For the game, ODU outshot Villanova 15-10, while Villanova held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Kealsie Robles registered five saves for the Lady Monarchs in the cage.
