RICHMOND, Va. -- Three different ODU field hockey players scored goals Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field to power the 15th-ranked Lady Monarchs to a 3-1 victory over Richmond. Now on a three-game winning streak, ODU improved to 3-1, 0-0 (BIG EAST) while the Spiders fell to 2-3, 0-0 (Atlantic 10).
"I am pleased that we found a way to win, but we have a long way to go as a team," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "One of our team goals this season is to win the fifty-fifty balls in each game, and today Richmond beat us in that area. We will look to have an improved performance on Sunday against William & Mary."
Chrissy Horn started the scoring for ODU, finding the back of the net on an unassisted goal off a rebound from a penalty corner in the 11th minute.
Danielle Grega extended Old Dominion's lead to 2-0 after scoring her third goal of the season in the 16th minute of play.
The Lady Monarchs took the 2-0 lead into the half, also leading the shot count 5-3 while the two squads were tied 2-2 in penalty corners.
In the opening minute of the second half, Richmond cut the deficit in half on a goal from Katrina Balatgek. Emma Johannson was credited with the assist.
The Lady Monarchs' Megan Byas added one more goal in the 48th minute off a penalty corner to seal the squad's third-straight victory. Freshman Marlee McClendon was awarded the assist.
For the game, Richmond outshot ODU 13-7 after tacking on 10 shots in the second half. The Spiders attempted seven penalty corners to ODU's four.
