WASHINGTON -- The 17th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team cruised past Georgetown, 5-0, Friday afternoon in the nation's capital, as Danielle Grega notched two goals in the second half and four different Lady Monarchs found the back of the net. ODU improved to 5-3, 1-1 (BIG EAST) while Georgetown fell to 2-7, 0-2 (BIG EAST).
"The result was a positive one, and I'm pleased to get a shutout," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "Our backfield came to play today and performed exceptionally well on a difficult surface. We need to continue to raise the bar with our play and have more team support off the ball to make us better. The team has a couple of days off to recover, and then we will prepare for a really exciting stretch of games ahead against some excellent teams."
Senior Megan Byas got the scoring started for the Lady Monarchs, finding the back of the cage in the 10th minute off an assist from Chrissy Horn.
Shortly after, sophomore Carrie Sensenig scored her first goal of the season to extend the ODU lead to 2-0.
ODU outshot Georgetown, 6-1, in the first half and maintained a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners over the Hoyas.
In the second half, Old Dominion's leading scorer Danielle Grega tacked on two goals while senior Casey Dolan added one more off an assist from Alexa Ostoich to propel the Lady Monarchs to a 5-0 win, their first conference victory of the season.
Goalkeeper Kealsie Robles recorded her first shutout of the year while registering five saves.
For the game, ODU outshot Georgetown 12-9 while maintaining a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.
