FAIRFAX, Va. – Old Dominion women’s soccer tied the match in the 73rd minute, only to have George Mason score a goal 62 seconds later, giving the Patriots a 2-1 victory over the Lady Monarchs in the 2016 regular season opener on Friday night at the George Mason Soccer Complex.

Old Dominion freshman Alex Davidson scored her first goal of her collegiate career in the 73rd minute, tying the match, 1-1, with 17 minutes remaining in regulation.

Just over one minute later, Mason’s Abby Downey headed-in a Hugrun Olafsdottir corner kick to ultimately lift the Patriots to a 2-1 win.

For the match, ODU dominated the shot-count 21-6, as well as the corner kick tally, 5-2. GMU’s goalkeeper, Kirsten Glad, was credited with 10 saves on the night, while ODU keeper, Krista Moisio made three in her Lady Monarch debut.

"This game taught us some important lessons tonight,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “We struggled in the first half and respect to George Mason, they took the game to us and we really couldn't get going. In the second half, we showed much more of what we are capable of and dominated for long periods. After so much pressure, we eventually equalized and got ourselves right back in the game. But to lose the second goal in the nature that we did certainly provides a learning moment. Like always, we will learn and get ready for the next challenge, which will be another competitive game on Sunday against Richmond.”

The Patriots got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 36th minute by Alex Myers, assisted by Nia Elbek, giving GMU a 1-0 at halftime. ODU held a 4-3 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.

NEXT UP FOR THE LADY SOCCER MONARCHS – HOME OPENER
Old Dominion will have its regular season home opener on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 6:00 p.m. against Richmond.

Sundays are now “Dog Days” at all home matches this year for ODU women’s soccer.

Following the success of ODU Baseball’s Bark in the Park the past three seasons, fans have requested more opportunities to bring their pets to outdoor athletic events. The Sunday Dog Days promotion will allow fans to bring their dogs, on a leash, to any soccer game that takes place on a Sunday. There is no charge for bringing a dog. During soccer games, dogs will be allowed on the grass area on the south and east sides of the ODU Soccer Complex.
