Six Monarchs Named VaSID Academic All-State

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six Old Dominion student athletes were named to the 2015-16 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State team, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Tyler Compton (football), Ryan Condotta (men's soccer), Morgan Gallagher (women's lacrosse), Morgan Johnson (women's swimming), Reed Mathews (men's swimming) and Maggie Simmermacher (women's golf) were the six Monarchs honored for their efforts in the classroom.

Compton, a junior offensive lineman, maintains a 3.92 GPA as a mathematics major. On the field, he played in all 12 games, making starts at left guard and center. The Virginia Beach native was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and the Conference USA All-Academic Team.

Condotta, a senior midfielder, is a model and simulation engineering major with a 3.59 GPA. A two-time Conference USA All-Academic Team member, the Keller, Texas, native started all but two games in his career, scoring 11 goals. 

Gallagher, a redshirt senior defender, will earn her Master's in interdisciplinary studies teacher prep in December. The West Chester, Pennsylvania, native has a 3.95 GPA and was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team, as well as Tournament MVP for the 2016 Atlantic Sun Championship.

Johnson, a senior swimmer, holds a 3.60 GPA as a chemistry major.  The Meadowview native was a member of the C-USA All-Academic Team and broke the school record in the 50 freestyle, finishing fifth at the C-USA Championship.

Mathews, a senior swimmer, is an engineering major and maintains a 3.73 GPA. The Denver native holds school records in the 100 and 200 fly and finished 17th at the NCAA Championship in the 200 fly.

Simmermacher, a sophomore golfer, is a business major and currently holds a 3.60 GPA. The Argentina native was a Second Team All-C-USA selection after placing 10th at the conference tournament. 

To be eligible, athletes need to maintain at least a 3.25 GPA and be a sophomore or higher. Overall, 234 student-athletes from 41 colleges and universities across the state were recognized.
