HOUSTON, Texas – The No. 45 nationally ranked and No. 2 seeded Old Dominion men’s tennis team (21-4) took down No. 3 seeded Middle Tennessee (17-10) by a 4-1 score in the Semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday.
With the win, the Tennis Monarchs will be right back in action tomorrow for the C-USA Championship against No. 26 nationally ranked and No. 1 seeded Rice at 12:00 p.m. EST. The winner of the C-USA Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
With wins from doubles tandems No. 1 and No. 2, Old Dominion jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Weindl gave ODU a 2-1 lead when he made quick work out of Dima Zyhmantovich (6-3, 6-4) in No. 3 singles.
Adam Moundir stretched the Tennis Monarchs’ lead to 3-1 after defeating Gonzalo Morell in straight sets (6-4, 7-6 (8-6)) in No. 1 singles.
Zvonimir Podvinski lifted Old Dominion to victory with a win over Gian Issa (7-6 (7-5), 7-5) in No. 5 singles.
The Tennis Monarchs have now claimed victory in 19 of their last 20 matches and 21 of their last 23. ODU is currently riding a seven-match win streak. At one point this season, Old Dominion won 12 in a row.
