HOUSTON, Texas – The No. 45 nationally ranked and No. 2 seeded Old Dominion men’s tennis team (20-4) downed No. 7 seeded Florida Atlantic by a 4-1 score in the Quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Old Dominion will be right back in action tomorrow in the Semifinals against Middle Tennessee at 1:00 p.m. EST. ODU and MT squared-off in what was both squads’ last match of the regular season in Norfolk on April 17, in a match that the Monarchs secured a victory at 4-1, before the Blue Raiders won the final two singles matches to make the final score 4-3.
The Tennis Monarchs have now claimed victory in 18 of their last 19 matches and 20 of their last 22. ODU is currently riding a six-match win streak. At one point this season, Old Dominion won 12 in a row.
ODU jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after claiming the doubles point with wins on Courts No. 1 and 3.
Adam Moundir gave Old Dominion a 2-1 lead after defeating Joao Gauer (6-3, 6-3) in No. 1 singles.
Michael Weindl extended the Monarchs’ lead to 3-1 when he proved to be too much for Zandrix Acob (6-0, 7-6 (7-0)) in No. 2 singles.
It was ODU's Jacob Nicolussi who secured the Monarchs a spot in the Semifinals on Saturday, when he got the better of Alexander Gitin (7-5, 6-1) in No. 5 singles.
