NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 44 Old Dominion University men’s tennis team (19-4) defeated Middle Tennessee (16-9) by a 4-3 score in the regular season finale, which also marked Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. ODU finished the season with a perfect 11-0 record at home.
ODU has won 17 of its last 18 matches, including wins against five nationally ranked teams.
The Tennis Monarchs jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after Michael Weindl and Jacob Nicolussi claimed a 6-3 win in No. 2 doubles, while senior Darragh Glavin and Theophile Lanthiez clinched with a 6-3 win in No. 3 doubles.
After doubles play, Darragh Glavin (Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland) and Zvonimir Podvinski (Zagreb, Croatia) were honored for their four years of hard-work to the program and commitment to the University, on and off the court.
The Blue Raiders tied the match at 1-1, but it was Old Dominion who won the next three singles matches, making the team score 4-1, sealing the deal on a victory for ODU.
Jacob Nicolussi, Adam Moundir and Javier Jover Maestre (in order) were victorious in singles play, lifting Old Dominion to its 19 win of the season.
Next up for the Tennis Monarchs will be the Conference USA Tournament, which will be hosted by Rice in Houston, Texas on April 22-24. Old Dominion’s seed, opponent and time of match(es) are TBD.
