WASHINGTON -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team pulled out a 7-6 road victory over American on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field.

With the game tied 5-5 with seven minutes remaining, Old Dominion (5-2) used consecutive goals from Morgan Marrale and Ashmore Standing to create a two-goal cushion. American (3-6) pulled within one in the final two minutes, but the Lady Monarch defense held strong to secure the 7-6 victory.

Standing led the Monarchs in scoring with three goals and one assist, while Connor Carson added two goals and Marrale contributed a goal and an assist. Standing also recorded a team-high three caused turnovers and four draw controls.

In a low-scoring first half, Carson opened the scoring with an upper right corner shot just five minutes into the game. American responded with consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead, but the Lady Monarchs answered, as Carson netted her second goal of the half on a free position attempt.

After a nearly 10-minute scoring drought, the Eagles took advantage of a man-up opportunity to retake the lead at 3-2 with seven minutes remaining in the half. American appeared to be heading into halftime with the lead, but Cydney Tutchton scored a goal with just 11 seconds left on the clock to send the game to halftime deadlocked at 3-3.

At the half, ODU held a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in draw controls. Maggi Buckley tallied three saves in the opening half, including two key stops on American free position attempts.

The Lady Monarchs opened the second half with a pair of goals from Standing just minutes into the half to take a 5-3 lead. However, American battled back to even the score back at 5-5. After 15 minutes of goal-less play, Marrale netted her unassisted to give the Lady Monarchs the lead that they would not relinquish.

Overall, ODU outshot American, 25-15, and held the Eagles to just six shots in the second half. The Lady Monarchs also held a 9-6 advantage in draw controls and forced 25 American turnoves, while committing just 21.

Buckley earned the win in goal, playing the full 60 minutes and recording three saves. A total of seven different Lady Monarchs caused turnovers and five different players recorded a draw control.
