RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 55 Old Dominion men’s tennis team (10-3) stunned No. 25 nationally ranked N.C. State (10-6) on the Wolfpack’s home court by a dominant 4-1 score on Sunday afternoon at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. ODU has now won eight consecutive matches, as the Monarchs went a perfect 8-0 for the month of February.

"Great team effort today,” said ODU head coach Aljosa Piric. “All 12 guys played their role today and earned this win against a good NC State team. I am happy with the way we competed. The doubles point came down to a tie-break on Aziz and Adam's court. We took that point and continued the momentum on Courts 4 and 6. Javier and Jacob were the catalysts for today's singles win. On the other courts, we hung in there, we embraced adversity and kept fighting.  That's what this team is all about.”

The Tennis Monarchs began the day by claiming the doubles point and a 1-0 lead after ODU’s tandem of Michael Weindl and Jacob Nicolussi won on Court No. 2, before No. 43 Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic sealed the deal on Court No. 1.

The Wolfpack tied the score up at 1-1, beforeJavier Jover Maestre made quick work out of Shoti Meparidze (6-1, 6-1) to give the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage.

Jacob Nicolussi had no problem with Ivan Saveljic (6-3, 6-1) on Court No. 6 to extend Old Dominion’s lead to 3-1.

It was ODU’s senior from Zagreb, Croatia, Zvonimir Podvinski who clinched the game, set and match for the Tennis Monarchs when he took down N.C. State’s Igor Saveljic (7-6, 6-4).

No. 55 Old Dominion will remain on the road next weekend, when they take on Elon on Saturday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. and then Charlotte on Sunday, March 6 at 11:00 a.m.

“We will go home, get some well-deserved rest and on Tuesday we will continue to build,” concluded Piric. “We have a tough weekend against Elon and Charlotte ahead.”
