NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 60 Old Dominion men’s tennis team (2-2) dominated Richmond (1-2) by a 7-0 score and then dominated cross-town rival Norfolk State (0-1) by a 6-1 score, as the Tennis Monarchs hosted a double-header for their first two home matches of the 2016 season at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Friday.

ODU jumped on the Spiders early when senior Darragh Glavin and sophomore Theophile Lanthiez defeated Caleb Troy and Brice Polender 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, while fellow Monarchs Michael Weindl and Jacob Nicolussi took care of Richmond’s Alexandre Felisa and Jonathan Quenard 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles position.

No. 1 singles Adam Moundir won his first win of the season in comeback fashion against Richmond’s No. 1 Jacob Dundar, who battled Moundir to two tiebreak sets 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (12-10).

ODU freshman Jose Nunez Navarro garnered his first victory as a Monarch in straight sets against the Spider’s junior Jonathan Quenard, 7-5, 6-3.

Impressively, Old Dominion won every singles match in straight sets against U of R.

Piric graduated from the University of Richmond in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in business management. As a member of the Spider's tennis team, Piric played at No. 1 singles and doubles and served as team captain his senior season.

The Monarchs only needed to win one doubles match to give ODU an early 1-0 advantage and it was Zvonimir Podvinski and Javier Jover Maestre who got the job done with a perfect 6-0 victory over Norfolk State’s Benedikt Henning and Antonio Pejic.

On singles Court 1, 2 and 3 Aziz Kijametovic, Javier Jover Maestre and Zvonimir Podvinski cruised past the Spartans’ competitors straight sets, guaranteeing the Monarchs the victory over Norfolk State on Friday.

Theophile Lanthiez battled back and forth with NSU’s Dan Dumitrascu on Court No. 4, but ultimately Lanthiez came out on top 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 1-0 (10-8).
