WACO- Texas – The No. 56 Old Dominion men’s tennis team (0-1) fell to No. 49 Oregon (4-0) in the first round of the 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday in the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.
No. 56 Old Dominion and No. 70 UC Irvine will play at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
To start the match, ODU’s Zvonimir Podvisnki and doubles partner Javier Jover Maestre defeated Oregon’s Bart Sawicki and Cormac Clissold, 6-3.
Old Dominion’s No. 28 nationally ranked doubles team of Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic took down Oregon’s Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno, 7-6 (7-4), giving the Monarchs an early 1-0 advantage.
In singles on Court No. 1, after dropping the first set (6-4) against No. 113 Daan Maasland, Adam Moundir rallied back to win the second set in convincing fashion, 6-1. However, in the third set Moundir fell just short, as Maasland claimed a 7-6(7-4) victory.
A total of 60 teams are competing in this years eighth annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend. In order to compete in the tournament teams need to finish the previous season ranked within the top 75.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend sends three visiting schools to a host site for a four-team tournament. The host school faces the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed plays the No. 3 seed. The winner of the four-team tournament will head to the ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Virginia on Feb. 12-15.
