Former Receivers Sign Pro Contracts
Larry Pinkard and Antonio Vaughan each signed professional contracts yesterday as Pinkard signed with the Oakland Raiders practice squad while Vaughan agreed to terms with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.
Vaughan is ODU's all-time leading receiver with 230 receptions for 3,267 yards and 33 receiving touchdowns. He also holds the record for total touchdowns scored with 37.
Pinkard caught 160 passes for 2,338 yards and 25 touchdowns with the Monarchs. Pinkard was with the Green Bay Packers for the preseason, catching five passes for 140 yards including a 77-yard touchdown catch.
Headlines in the CFL
In his fourth season in the Canadian Football League, former Monarch Deron Mayo had his best season for the Calgary Stampeders. Mayo finished the year with 72 tackles, five sacks and a forced fumble helping the Stampeders to a 14-4 regular season record and advancing to the Western finals before losing to the eventual champion Edmonton.
In his four year career with Calgary, Mayo has 205 tackles, 13 sacks and an interception.
Former ODU quarterback Thomas DeMarco completed his second year on the Ottawa Redblacks and third year in the CFL. DeMarco was the backup quarterback for Ottawa behind the league's Most Outstand Player, Henry Burris. DeMarco completed one pass for seven yards and had two runs for 22 yards. He also punted 12 times for an average of 38.3 yards per punt. DeMarco and the Redblacks advanced to the Grey Cup, falling to Edmonton 26-20.
