RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s basketball team hits the road for a showdown against state foe Richmond on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Robins Center. The game will be televised on the American Sports network (ASN). The Monarchs will be looking to win their first game on the road since Feb. 28, when they traveled to Denton and took down North Texas, 70-57.

Just a season ago, Richmond advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT, while the Monarchs advanced to the semifinals of the same tournament.

THE SERIES
Old Dominion leads the all-time series, 30-25. The teams most recently met last season in Norfolk at the Ted, where the Monarchs proved to be too much for the Spiders, 63-57. The ODU victory snapped a three-game losing streak to U of R.  These two squads first met during the 1977-78 season.

LAST TIME OUT
ODU is coming off a road loss at Georgia State on Saturday by a 68-64 score, in a game that experienced a total of 13 lead changes and six ties. ODU’s Zoran Talley recorded a career-high of 16 points on eight of 12 shooting from the floor to go along with five rebounds. Trey Freeman also netted 16 points (10-10 FT), while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Old Dominion connected on 15-17 (88.2%) free-throws, but was 1-12 from deep, while Georgia State shot 53.8% (7-13) from long-range. The Monarchs outscored the Panthers in the paint, 34-18.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the season, Freeman is leading the way for the Monarchs averaging 15.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 2.7 apg. Bacote is averaging 13.8 points a contest, while Zoran Talley is netting 9.5 ppg. Nik Biberaj is chipping in 6.0 points per outing to go along with 4.7 boards. Denzell Taylor currently leads ODU with 60 rebounds (6.7 per game).

Old Dominion is averaging 65.2 points a game, while holding opponents to 57.8 points on 37.3% shooting from the floor and 26.5% from long-range. The Monarchs average 11.2 forced turnovers per contest.

MEET THE SPIDERS
Richmond enters Wednesday’s contest with a 6-3 overall record and is 4-1 at home. The Spiders picked up victories vs. Stetson (108-85), at Wake Forest (91-82), vs. Bethune Cookman (89-64), vs. No. 14 California (94-90), vs. Northern Iowa (82-67) and vs. Longwood (77-59). U of R has suffered defeats vs. JMU (75-87), vs. No. 22 West Virginia (59-67) and at Florida (56-76).

In the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, Richmond was picked to finish fifth out of 14 teams. Richmond’s Terry Allen and ShawnDre’ Jones were tabbed to the preseason all-conference third team.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Spiders have a total of four players averaging double-digits entering Wednesday’s contest. 6’8” senior forward Terry Allen has led the way for Richmond so far this season, averaging 20.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Also averaging double-figures are ShawnDre Jones (15 ppg), T.J. Cline (15 ppg) and Marshall Wood (11.3) ppg. Cline is the son of former Lady Monarch great and Hall of Famer, Nancy Lieberman.

Richmond is scoring 81.2 points per game, while connecting on 48% from the floor and 39% from deep, drilling 8.7 three’s per contest. U of R is sharing the nugget, dishing out 17.3 assists per ballgame. In Richmond’s five home games at the Robins Center, the average attendance is 6,075.

RICHMOND HEAD COACH – CHRIS MOONEY
The Spiders are led by head coach Chris Mooney, who is in the midst of his 11th season at the helm in Richmond. Mooney ranks third all-time in the Spider record books with a career record of 187-144 at Richmond for a winning percentage of .565.

He has led the Spiders to six postseason appearances, including NCAA Tournament trips in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and a trip to the NIT Quarterfinals in 2014-15. In the spring of 2011, Mooney’s Spiders made national headlines en route to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, knocking off five-seed Vanderbilt and Morehead State in the process. Richmond finished both the 2010 and 2011 seasons ranked in the Top 25.
