William & Mary Outlasts Old Dominion, 55-48

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – ODU’s Trey Freeman and Aaron Bacote each went for 14 points, but Omar Prewitt scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to lead William & Mary (5-2) to a 55-48 victory over Old Dominion (3-4) at Kaplan Arena on Tuesday night. The game experienced a total of 10 ties and six lead changes, while the Monarchs held the Tribe to 0-15 from three point range, a William & Mary team which entered the contest shooting 41.3% from three and 47.1% last three games.

For the game, Old Dominion led for a total of 23:41, while William & Mary led for 6:10. The contest was tied for a total of 10:09. Zoran Talley paced the Monarchs on the boards with eight to go along with eight points.

An Aaron Bacote and-one gave Old Dominion a 44-41 lead with 3:39 to play, before W&M’s Omar Prewitt answered back with an and-one of his own to tie the ballgame back up at 44-44. Bacote answered back again with a jumper, giving ODU a 46-44 lead, before Terry Tarpey tied the game back up with 2:33 left.

Bacote gave Old Dominion the lead again, 48-46, with 2:04 left, only to have Prewitt tie the contest for the tenth time with 1:46 to play, 48-48, before the Tribe ultimately scored seven unanswered to give them a 55-48 victory on Tuesday night in Williamsburg.

In the early stages of the ballgame, Old Dominion forced the Tribe into a scoring drought that lasted 5:31, consisting of 0-6 from the floor in that span and 0-5 from deep, while the Monarchs jumped out to an early 13-8 advantage with 9:03 to play in the opening half.

In a first half that Old Dominion led for a total of 12:40, the Monarchs would take a 22-19 lead into the locker rooms with them at halftime behind seven points from Trey Freeman to lead all scorers. ODU forced the Tribe into going 0-8 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes and 32% from the floor. Denzell Taylor led all rebounders with five.

Prewitt grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists to go along with his game-high 18 points. The Tribe outscored the Monarchs 36-26 in the second half.

NEXT UP FOR THE BASKETBALL MONARCHS
Old Dominion will return home for the first time since Nov. 18 on Friday, Dec. 4, when they will take on Delaware State at 7:00 p.m. The Monarchs currently are riding a 27-game home winning streak, which is the sixth longest in the country.
