NORFOLK, Va. -- The 12th-ranked Old Dominion men's soccer team opens Conference USA play this weekend with a showdown at Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.

"They're a very difficult team to play against," said head coach Alan Dawson about the 49ers. "They're skillful, energetic very attractive in the way they play and also tough. The gameplan has to be good and we have to be mentally ready to go into a hostile environment and get it done."

ODU (4-1-0) enters the weekend on a four-match winning streak, which has helped the Monarchs climb to No. 12 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll. The offensive attack has played a key part in the early-season success for the Monarchs, as the team ranks fifth in the NCAA in scoring offense with a 2.80 goals per game average.

A trio of seniors in Ryan Condotta, Josue Henriquez and Ivan Militar lead the Monarchs in scoring. Henriquez has tallied a team-high four goals, including a hat trick against Akron, while Condotta and Militar have combined for five goals and three assists.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen has been strong in net for ODU, posting a 0.97 goals against average and two shutouts.

Charlotte (2-2-1) was picked as the preseason favorite to win the conference this season. The 49ers won the regular season C-USA title last year and are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll. Charlotte is led by senior forward Kyle Parker, who was named all-conference and a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist last year. Parker has two goals so far this season.

The Monarchs lead the all-time series with a record of 8-2-3, including three victories over the 49ers in the past two seasons. Last year, ODU topped a Charlotte team that was ranked fourth in country twice, once in the regular season and once in the C-USA Tournament.
