PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – Head coach Aljosa Piric took his Tennis Monarchs to the Penn Invitational, giving the Old Dominion University men’s tennis team its first competition of the 2015 fall season. For the third and final day of competition, Old Dominion took on Columbia, meaning all four of the Tennis Monarchs opponents this weekend were from the Ivy League.
Teams which competed in the 2015 UPenn Invite included Buffalo, Columbia, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Princeton, St. John’s, VCU, William & Mary, Yale and Penn.
DAY ONE NOTES
In day one and match one in Philadelphia against Princeton, Adam Moundir (6-0, 6-1), Aziz Kijametovic (7-6(2), 6-3) and Jacob Nicolussi (3-6, 6-3, (10-2)) all claimed victories in singles play.
In doubles against Princeton, all three of ODU’s top three tandems handled business: Adam Moundir/Michael Weindl won 6-4 on Court No. 1,Aziz Kijametovic/Zvonimir Podvinski won 6-2 on Court No. 2 and Jacob Nicolussi/Darragh Glavin won 6-3 on Court No. 3.
Old Dominion next played another Ivy League squad in Yale to cap off day one. In singles against the Bulldogs, Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic again got the better of their opponents. Also pulling out a win for ODU in singles against Yale was Michael Weindl. Old Dominion’s Moundir paired up with classmate Kijametovic in doubles on Court No. 1 and defeated Andrienko/Lu (Yale), 7-6.
DAY TWO NOTES
The Tennis Monarchs took on host UPenn on day two of three, and yet again it was Adam Moundir winning in singles on Court No. 1, as he took down Penn’s Alexander Day (6-0, 6-1) handily. On Court No. 3 Michael Weindl (ODU) defeated Nicholai Westergaard in a tight three-setter (3-6, 7-6(4), 10-5).
Old Dominion’s Zvonimir Podvinski proved to be too much for Penn’s Ismael Lahlou, in what turned out to be a marathon match (6-7(6), 7-6(3), 11-9). In another back and forth three-setter, it was ODU’s Justin Herrera who prevailed over Thomas Spratt (7-5, 2-6, 10-4).
DAY THREE NOTES
In Old Dominion’s final competition of the weekend, they squared off with Columbia. The Tennis Monarchs dominated doubles play, claiming wins in three of the four matches.
In No. 1 doubles, Adam Moundir paired up with Michael Weindl and made quick work of Columbia’s Matheson/Rolski (6-1).Next, Old Dominion’s Aziz Kijametovic and Jacob Nicolussi handled Columbia’s tandem Hadavi/Pham via a 6-3 score. On Court No. 3 Zvonimir Podvinski and Darragh Glavin (ODU) defeated Alda/Wang, 6-4.
